APPEARANCE Standing at an even six feet tall, some hundred-eighty pounds of lean and laid-back muscle, Jack is not an unusual sight amongst most crowds. He has skin paler than the average - Probably all the time he spends up at night, or inside reading or practicing - And a mass of unkempt hair on his head, brown, almost dark enough to be black. He's a bit on the thin side at a glance, as most of the [little amount of] exercise he gets doesn't go towards heavy muscle tone, but instead towards dexterity and fine manipulation of himself or other things - tools, vehicles, digits, etc. He prefers to keep to a sort of "business casual" dress code: Dark jeans, white shirt, suit jacket, tie, and some comfortable shoes, like sneakers. Or wingtips. And, while it might seem a bit out of place, Jack's rarely seen out and about without one of his two favorite walking sticks: Either a hefty piece of dark-stained Hickory, or a nice modern piece with a smoothed burled Sequoia pommel grip. The former was once his uncle Stein's walking stick, according to what the older folks in his home neighborhood of Crystal Rio told him. The latter is a newer piece he bought himself a few years back, with a dark carbon-black finish, a stainless steel ferrule tip, and a wonderfully carved handle of antique Portuguese Sequoia, straight from the Azores. It even has a little button and a stainless steel collar a ways down the handle... Sunglasses are also a must, preferably nothing obscenely expensive or outrageous. A plain pair of dark mirror aviators or $15 shades is fine by him, helping to cover up one of his most notable features: Jack's eyes are a striking shade of blue that isn't commonly seen where he's from, a deep, expressive sapphire. It really lends a lot to when he looks at somebody for any significant length of time; If the light catches them just right, they can look hard and intimidating, helping for when he's giving somebody an inquisitive glare - Or soft, warm, like the sky after a rainfall. This, his paler-than-usual complextion, and his usually out-of-place "professional" attire, tends to attract attention to him most places he goes... That, and the tattoo rather plainly visible on the back of his neck. It's a strange symbol of a simplified orange broadsword laid over a black, thorny circlet, blade pointing down - It may be the symbol of the mystic Sect or order he belongs to... Or it could be something he saw in a tattoo parlor when he was fourteen and had to have. He hasn't really elaborated upon it. HOBBIES Going for solitary walks or bike rides; Sleeping; Philisophical debates and conversations; Trying to cook; Reading; Fighting Evil; Reading about fighting Evil; Playing Checkers; Training. HABITS Jack tends to use his hands when he's talking. Or when he's not talking - which occurs more often than the previous scenario. He's got expressive hands, making little motions with them in a subconscious effort to convey his meaning and articulate himself. He also has a bit of a habit of getting angry or losing his cool when he's caught off-guard; He's supposed to be the consummate professional, always competent, always with a cool, impressive visage. When that image of himself that he presents on the surface is messed with, he doesn't tend to take it too well. He's got a few minor behavior ticks, such as an inability to resist snarking at inopportune moments, or a bit too much of an attraction to old-fashioned technology. Or a complete and utter bullheaded disregard for deep, convoluted plans and/or conspiracies. PERSONALITY Is all the foolery and apparent incapability to act like a normal person some effort to put up a tough persona, because he doesn't know how else to act when around people? Is he just obfuscating stupidity to hide the reality that he's some hypercompetent operative from a clandestine secret order of knights or something equally neat and befitting an action-novella story?... Or is the the guy in the cool shades really just that above it all? The inner workings of Jack Abelnine's mind are, in a word, an enigma... Or so he'd like people to think. On the outside, he tries to maintain an air of mystery and uncertainty, playing like the wild card in a stacked deck of kings and queens and other things befitting a card metaphor like that; On the inside, though, he's kind of a goof. He's well aware of this, and so he tries his best to keep any negative aspect of his from showing through the tough, unfettered image he's made for himself. This means he can be a bit preoccupied with trying to come off as a cold-blooded professional... And he's lacking a bit of charm because of it. Talking with other people doesn't seem to come naturally to him most of the time, especially when he's trying to have a positive impact, or politely request something from somebody. When it comes to weapons-grade snarking or sarcastically lambasting somebody, though, he's got no problem with subtlety. Really, though, mister Abelnine is a nice enough guy when he's off work hours... Whatever his work happens to be in any given week. He works hard at whatever task he's presented with, for the most part, and tries to get things done with a minimum of wasted effort or unnecessarily-expended energy. This sort of dedication to his works means he doesn't quite know how to act in the general public all the time though, being raised like he was, and so he can be something of an oddity to encounter for the first time, all quiet and reserved until something riles him up or catches his attention. This doesn't mean he's anti-social, it's just that most of his life didn't require him to be a social guy. All of this is a complex layering of different facets, though. Multiple Inception-esque levels of obfuscating stupidity and social anxiety stacked on top of one another, all hiding a sharp-minded individual. He tends to exaggerate aspects of himself at different times, coming off as a quiet man with few words to say, or a dullard with no tact and a blunt approach to people and society at large, or a full-of-himself blowhard. These are all very real parts of him, but not all of him. At his core, Jack is a complex guy who'll claim he's a simpleton, preferring to let his actions speak louder than his words. When it comes down to the wire, he can be very on-the-ball with an eye for detail, ready to be the tough guy or stone wall for his friends. If he had to characterize himself, Jack would probably say he's akin to an old noir protagonist: Full of cynicism and sarcasm, brimming with all sorts of anti-hero tropes and traits, always walking that razor's edge between gritty anti-hero, and out-and-out villain. He's vaguely aware of morals, and he's fairly that on the scale between "Good" and "Not-Good", he falls pretty squarely towards the "Good" side, despite however much collateral damage he or his superiors might end up getting billed for at the end of the day. Even though he's got a tendency to come off as a screwball when he opens his mouth, he's a genuinely good guy, most of the time. HISTORY (... Still workin' on this one too >>) RELATIONSHIPS Jack is still in contact with his elderly uncle, Stein Abelnine. He used to be an everyman in New Mexico City, doing anything from felling trees, to carpentry, to working the shipping lanes between the city and Crystal Rio. Stein is the man who took Jack in when the boy's parents died, and who instilled in him his work ethic and staightforward attitude towards problems. ( ANIMANGA; FACECLAIM NAME AS CHARACTER NAME ) |
