Experience Points
When do you get Experience Points?
Players get experience points per character (players can play multiple characters, however how much you play them and what you do is their growth factor. Not playing a character and it having dust gather will not have it grow…) Players are limited to 2 Knight/Senshi/Guardians, but can take on any number of minor characters like friends, or parents, or whatever of other people’s characters. (Playing your own parent/best friend will get boring..)
How do we earn get Experience Points?
Characters gain XP in a multitude of ways- but mostly they gain XP by simply doing a lot of stuff in character.
We believe that it's not about "quantity" of posts, but "Quality" so while a back and forth thread that fills up 5 pages of a thread may be fun, it may not be more than two people having a long, drawn out conversation about the weather. Plus, we kind of 'expect' you to be active- and checking the board not just once or twice a week. So no, you don't get points "just" for posting- that's an expectation, not a thing to be rewarded for.
There is no limit on words in a post. While we do expect you to have at least 100 words in your post and be going somewhere with it (or walking out of the thread) we don’t have a “must have” basis. We find that sometimes it’s better not to write something that is just something to make the word count high enough for a post. (But let’s face it, if you can’t think of something to say it might be a) time to leave the thread or b) time to talk to an ST.)
Why do you get Experience Points?
One Point- Active Character Post 30 posts a month- total.
One Point - Journal Your Adventure. This journal is a written account your character writes, blogs, or otherwise records. It's purely optional, but it helps keep your "character's" adventures recorded so over time you have a running record of what you have, and haven't done.
One Point - Inspired Roleplaying- not just one scene but a character that is constantly talked about and a magnet to things going on is a powerful force in the game and make it enjoyable for everyone.
One Point - Heroism- Yes, we award points for those times your character really behaves as a hero. A hero is someone who risks it all to let friends, or even stranger’s escape from disaster or death. A hero is someone who does try to do the right thing. If a hero manages to act heroically even though it costs him / her something (perhaps even their life) they should be rewarded. Don't get the idea that 'acting' heroic with the intent to get this experience point is like doing one GOOD deed before Santa comes to wipe away all the evil you do the rest of the chapter. Stupidity and Suicidal behavior also will not be rewarded- as that isn't heroism!
One Point - Success. Your character achieved their original "goals" in character they set out to accomplish- even if those were minor ones that have changed into major goals. Your working toward your character's ultimate destiny!
One point- Danger: The character has survived against harsh odds and grave dangers- You didn't die or have to be reincarnated. You managed to survive where others before you have failed.
One point- Wisdom: The Player, and thus the character, came up with some brilliant plan or even a spontaneous strategy that enabled the group to survive when they normally would have failed otherwise- perhaps experienced the dreaded full-party wipe out.
One Point- Social: This is a pretty broad category but it’s for those people who reach out to their other characters --- in character--- and works on becoming a team, or group, or just a social exercise. People who play leaders, or supporters, who genuinely work toward the group dynamic can earn an extra EXP a month.
Staff members get 1 extra experience point for their character for helping story lines and running scenes. That also represents their faces and experiences because they have had to deal with Storyteller Rage.
* This includes Moderators who monitor various things, and assistant storytellers who assist with the NPCs and storytelling, as well as advertisers, who go out and advertise our game! (10 sites would be 1 EXP a month.)
Characters also can get experience by being manipulated and following the rules for Charm’s results. That’s right, I’m bribing you to actually go with the rolls and do what your character, may or may not feel like it’s right. That’s because OOC you know your being manipulated and few people like that. I understand, but in character, the charmers and manipulators get their time in the sun to….
All characters cap at 5 EXP a month, which is the equivalent to 1 level up. The only EXP that is not character-oriented is the staff EXP, which can be put toward any character.
What is this Level Up you Speak of?
Characters “level” up in character by getting additional moves and bonuses that are not just for when they are transformed. Let’s face it. Your character is going from something static- to someone that is being changed as their lives progress. You may loose some of your cool, or charm, or tough--- and when you “level” you can gain it back or put those points into something that makes your developing character make sense.
Leveling also gives a sense and feel that we’re moving forward. Your characters are ‘accomplishing’ something. That is to be celebrated.
5 EXP can be spent for 1 level up. At Level up you can gain a trait, a special move, or even a special bonus, toward your character. (You get bonuses at 5, and 10s of every level instead of a special move or trait.)
Magical/ Senshi abilities also unlock through the level up system ‘and’ through game play. There are simply times when the universe steps in and force levels your character. But you can still use your level up to improve your Magical/Senshi’s abilities. (This goes for all characters)
Why did you put a limit on EXP?
Let’s face it. Sometimes we all have a rough month- where we simply don’t play as much as we’d like because life kicked us in the teeth--- or we opted for a vacation away from kicking! As a result you may only get 1 or 2 exp as opposed to the 10-15 someone else might get. Quickly you can see how the playing field would become not even.
One of the main philosophy’s of my (Joy’s) Games are that we’re all gaming in a safe environment. To me, all my friends are equal to all my players. That is, just because you and I don’t talk on skype every day- doesn’t mean that you won’t be treated exactly the same as anyone else in my games. I have been in too many games over the last twenty years where “oh, so and so is the Storytellers Significant other…. That’s why they get away with murder.” Not here. Not ever.
You are here to play a game. We’re here to play with you. A limit on monthly EXP *per character* doesn’t say if you’re really active you can’t have more than one character to share the love. In fact, we encourage it. The more bodies in character, the more chances for us to play together. And those who are slower / can’t post as often are still not punished because the forum allows for game play 24/7.
There is a complaint form if you feel that you are ever mistreated or not listened to. We’re not here to chase you out or ban you. If we feel there’s a problem we will approach you with respect and the same courtesy we expect from you when dealing with a problem. We’re here to play a game, not play pin the horns on the players.
